Long Island Man Busted For Driving High On Drugs, Crashing, Police Say

A Long Island man was charged with alleged DWAI/drugs and possession of drugs following a single-vehicle crash.

The incident took place in Nassau County around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 18 in the area of 7 Newbridge Road in Hicksville.

According to Nassau County Police, officers responded to the scene of an auto accident in which Patrick Schlereth, age unknown, of East Meadow, had lost control of his 2022 Subaru Outback when he struck two parked cars causing his vehicle to overturn.

An investigation was conducted and Schlereth was placed under arrest without incident, police said.

While in police custody Schlereth was found to be in possession of a clear glass vile, containing a burnt substance believed to be crack cocaine, police said.

He was transported to a local area hospital for treatment of his injuries and is currently in stable condition. No other injuries were reported, police said. 

Schlereth was charged with:

  • DWAI drugs
  • Criminal possession of a controlled substance 
  • Two counts of aggravated unlicensed operation
  • Unlicensed operation of a vehicle.

He will be arraigned on Friday, April 19, in Hempstead.
